Some of Arganica’s Challenges
We here at Arganica believe that eating better and more sustainably is incremental. First you go to the closest food sources possible. You meet the farmers and get to know them. That’s where we are right now. We’ve found them, gotten to know them, and are getting their product to you. Directing your food dollars to them goes a long way in supporting family farms and their communities, and keeping land surrounding DC rural. Also, family farms are far friendlier to the environment than large factory farms, where supermarket foods tend to come from.
Next, we want all the details on how our producers grow their food. Soon we will be providing you with information on things like how they control pests, weeds, whether any synthetic products are used, and how they raise their animals. This is information we plan to post to our web site as it becomes available.
Another challenge for us is getting a broad range of produce during the winter months. Many of our local growers use greenhouses and are able to supply us with some wonderful produce during the cold months. For those who want more than what they can grow, we seek sources farther south to fill in the gaps. We don’t necessarily get to meet these growers personally, but we do make every effort to gather accurate information about where their farms are located and whether they are no-spray.
Fortunately, in addition to our greenhouse growers, we have a long list of local and regional gourmet food artisans, dairy farmers, meat producers, poultry farmers, and fishermen that provide outstanding foods year round.
We invite you to join us on our journey to greater transparency and a higher level of sustainability. By joining Arganica Farm Club, you will play an important role in making this happen.
